FRIULI FOR ALL!
Friuli for all! With itineraries involving every sense and enabling everybody to live a unique, extraordinary experience!
We dedicate the morning to discover Polcenigo, a true source of history, architecture and art. The guide drives us along the narrow, peaceful streets, whose silence is interrupted only by the water flow. A gem not to be missed is the Italian garden, arranged in terraces and designed in the second half of the 19th century, hidden behind the noble Salice Scolari Palace. Then we discover the taste of the saffron in a local tavern, toasting with an aperitif created with this precious flower. We get on the bus and we head to Sacile, with a stop for lunch with Friulian specialties. In the afternoon have a walk with the guide through the wonderful Old Town. Sacile is called “Giardino della Serenissima”, for its Venetian atmospheres and for the architectures that live together in harmony with astounding natural elements. Our walk is guided by the Livenza river, that we cross in three different points and that ,in summer, gives us a bit of refreshment: ancient palaces, squares and small churches will be the protagonists of our tour.
Today we are going to visit Gradisca d’Isonzo, one of the most “Beautiful Villages in Italy”, a refined baroque “living room” situated on the right side of the Isonzo river. It was built by the Venetians, with Leonardo Da Vinci’s help, to protect themself from the Turkish invasion. Then we visit Piazza Unità d’Italia, the Venetian Armory, ( one of the best preserved artifacts from Gradisca), the castle, built by the Austrians in the sixteenth century. We continue then to the Jewish Ghetto, where eight Jewish houses are identified by roman numbers to make them differ from “regular” houses, marked by Arabian numbers. After the visit, we experience a tasting to try the specialties from the Isonzo area. Then, it’s time to visit the “Sacrario Militare Italiano” – “Italian War Memorial”, built in the 30s to remind us of of the World War 1’s victims. We are in Redipuglia: the visit is a touching commemoration moment, followed by a visit to Dolina dei Bersaglieri, where boundary stones and entrancements reminds us of the dreadful story of the place. We can even go in the entrancement to deeply feel the narrow and unhospitable space where soldiers spent long months.
Today we are going to visit the fascinating mountain Village of Poffabro, whose square is literally a wonderful panoramic terrace over the hills, surrounded by the first village houses and by the cathedral. Next to the latter there is the legendary statue of the scampanotador, the bell ringer. We leave the square behind, to “get lost” among the narrow streets overlooked by the traditional wooden houses. The outer wooden staircases create awesome architectural effects. In December, this amazing village becomes a nativity scene under the stars: every family creates its own Nativity, creating a spontaneous exhibition visited by many tourists every year. We listen to the silence that dominates in the Village where you can hear only the wind blow. The small available space forced the city to develop itself in height, in a sort of “Manhattan effect”. In the afternoon we continue our tour in Maniago to visit the museum of Arte Fabbrile e delle Coltellerie, located in an old knife factory, the largest in Maniago, called “Coricama”. The guided visit that will lead us in an emotional tactile experience, will allow us to discover a process that goes from ancient knowledge to modern iron manufacturing technique.
Today we are going to visit Venzone, “A Medieval living room”, winner of the title for The best Italian Village in 2017, that paid honour to all the Friulians that worked at its rebuilding, after the 1976 destructive earthquakes. The architecture of the Village reveals many secrets: it’s up to you to discover them! Then we enter the Orgnani-Martina palace, home of the accessible museum of Venzone that hosts the permanent exhibition “Tiere Motus - History of an earthquake and its people”. Then we visit the cathedral, a jewel of this Village, in a French Gothic stile, an example of a restoration made “stone by stone” that became famous all over the world. In the Cathedral we can see the wonderful statue of Franco Maschio, that reminds us of the tragic 1976 earthquake. Now we move on towards San Daniele for an unforgettable culinary experience: we taste the legendary ham with a good glass of wine. Then we move on in the Old Town to visit the Museo del Territorio, the local museum, where we end our day with a sweet break: the chocolate and the liqueurs from a handmade local workshop are ready to delight us.
