The Middle Ages in Valvasone

The itinerary runs through Cordenons, cutting across vast stretches of fields, over the Medusa Torrent and through the quiet countryside to Arzene and Valvasone. On the way back, there is a detour through Murlis, crossing the ford of the Meduna on foot and the area to the south of the line of resurgences that is of environmental importance, to just pass by Cordenons and after a short distance return to the starting point.

Valvasone was once a defensive settlement to protect the Tagliamento ford back in the Roman era, the crossroads of ancient roads. Today Valvasone offers a picturesque medieval town as can be seen by the urban layout, the castle, the gate tower, the arcaded houses, the buildings, the old churches, streets and the few traces left of the double walls around the town.

The route starts from piazzale dei Mutilati (0.0 km) on via S. Valentino, which from the town centre leads to Cordenons. Take via S. Valentino and immediately after the underpass turn left into via G. Galilei. At the end of the road turn right, go across the STOP sign and continue along via Stradelle. Again, following the main road (approximately 3.3 km), cross a small roundabout, pass the STOP sign (with the sign for CORDENONS beforehand) and follow the road that bends to the left. Go across the crossroads up to the STOP sign where via Stradelle ends. Turn left and then right at the crossroads with via Cervel and via Maestra. Now continue along via Maestra, cross the junction with via S. Quirino (flashing light) (5.1 km up to this point), leaving the small church of S. Giacomo on the right and, shortly after, when reaching a small junction, continue to the right along the main road.

Having passed the sign indicating that you are leaving Cordenons, the route proceeds through the countryside. At a large crossroads (7.8 km), continue straight ahead (signs for Spilimbergo and Zoppola). (To the left is the Croce di Venchiaruzzo – Cross of Venchiaruzzo). Go along the quiet provincial road SP 51 and, after several wide bends and a bump, cross two sections of paved ford (When there has been heavy rainfall, make sure that the ford can be crossed), over another bump up to the underpass of the Cusano-Sequals highway (11.5 km). Then, ignoring the road to Murlis on the right (which will be taken on the way back), the route comes to a crossroads (12.1 km). Keep to the right and continue along the wide road to the crossroads. Turn left and immediately right (road signs to Valvasone), across the countryside to reach the roundabout at ARZENE (15.8 km).

Cross the town for a distance of 1700 metres, across flashing lights and the square that is on the right until reaching a STOP sign. Take the turning on the left into via Santa Margherita, which ends with the traffic lights, then turn right and after a short distance is the town of VALVASONE. Continue along via San Pietro (getting off and pushing the bike as it is a no-entry street), cross Piazza Mercato, leaving the Duomo on the right and reaching the central and picturesque Piazza Castello. (18.7 km). (Stop and rest in the park behind the castle) At the end of the visit in the centre, start the return trip. The same route can be taken to go back. When getting to the Cusano-Sequals highway, (on the SP 51) turn left at the crossroads (signs for Murlis and Cordenons) (25.2 km) and after a few metres turn left again into the road leading to Murlis.

Pass the characteristic church of MURLIS and when the road turns towards the left, take the narrow via dell’Argine to the right. The road becomes a dirt track. Continue past an abandoned fish farm and, after a straight stretch of road, go under the highway (and cut across two gravely roads), going down along a dirt track that leads to the small ford of the Meduna (approx. 29 km), which is gravely and therefore should be crossed by pushing the bike. (On rare occasions when there is water in the ford, go back to the crossroads with provincial road SP 51 and continue along the original route). Having crossed the riverbed (approx. 400 m), follow the gravely road, ignoring the side cart tracks through fields and woods, and after about 1300 metres, take a small road to the left and continue for quite a distance through farmland and woods.

Cross over two small bridges, then a third one with a guardrail and cross the Enel canal. At the crossroads, turn left and immediately after turn left again. At the next one turn right and then left to return to a paved road coming out into via Pasch. (35.3 km). Keep to the left and immediately turn right into via Melonera Format, which is a wide road to be followed up to the crossroads with via Bellasio that is taken to the left. Ignore the side roads, pass the signs indicating that you are leaving CORDENONS and entering PORDENONE and at the crossroads turn right into via V.Veneto then turn sharply to the left into via Terme Romane, which is closed to traffic. Continue straight ahead into via della Libertà and after about 200 metres turn to the right into via P. F. Calvi. At the roundabout, turn left into via Rive Fontane, which after the underpass, takes you back to Piazza dei Mutilati where the route finishes. From Valvasone the distance is 20.7 km; the whole route is 39.4 km
