A kaleidoscope of glimpses and suggestions, where history and modernity, nature and industrialisation live together in perfect harmony. Along the waters that lap Portus Naonis, the ancient mooring for commercial shipping, is mirrored the thriving nature of a town in constant turmoil, where in the palaces decorated by Contrada Maggiore the rival attractions are the works spread along the watercourse. The bell-towers of the Duomo of San Marco and of the church of San Giorgio stand out imperiously in guardianship of the provincial capital.

In the houses of age-old stone cut into blocks and set one upon another, which alternate with them wood dalt – horizontal balconies – you can still read today the history of this ancient and picturesque hamlet. On the first Sunday in September, on the occasion of “Paesi aperti” the silent small roads come to life with people consuming typical dishes of the local tradition.

Enclosed between two streams and strongly linked to agriculture, it reflects the harshness of the surrounding land also in its dwellings. The hamlet of Colle, which faces onto the course of the Meduna River below, offers unusual views and rare splendour from the white stone and bright Magredi, visited by horsemen or mountain bike riders. In the past it was an area of great emigration, exporting its “know-how” to various places in the world.

The defence of Christianity in Europe has its champion in this land. Beato Marco d'Aviano, the Capuchin monk who – brandishing a crucifix – stopped the siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683, was born in a small house that is still well preserved today in the hamlet of Villotta. Going from the sacred to the profane, Villa Policreti in Castel d'Aviano is a marvellous 16th century building surrounded by a large romantic park, site of one of the most prestigious golf clubs in northern Italy.

Nature is the connecting link between the past and present in this town totally projected to the future. Wet pastures, reed thickets, willows, huckbery and artificial pools paint green a strongly human urban fabric. Around the highest bell-tower in the Province, the dwellings gently thin out until reaching the place where Neolithic and Roman evidence is visible.  In June the Fiera della musica, an appointment with live rock, is held.

«This beautiful lake with this blue light, with this circle of mountains around that cannot but make everybody feel that this is a proper place, like a universal place; and universal is poetry, universal is this beauty that makes a person visiting it for the first time exclaim “what a beautiful place”.Thus the man of letters Vittorio Sgarbi "sang" about his Barcis, where in July every year the national poetry competition  Malattia della Vallata is held.

The most beautiful monument in this community is dedicated to nature: the park of Villa Varda, that from time to time is dressed in the hot colours of autumn and the sparkling spring colours, presents excitement and great romanticism along its avenues flanked by rare trees. In this area of Friuli beats the heart of the Furniture cluster, production centre of national importance, with the many businesses that arose almost spontaneously in the second half of the 1900s.

Simple, Spartan, like the hand-worked stone by local stone-dressers: in this way this small community in green surroundings, from where chefs left in the past, kitchen and hotel personnel who became famous throughout the world, is presented to the tourists' eyes. To mushrooms is dedicated – in the second and third weeks of September – a very famous country festival where Italian and foreign mycologists meet.

From the Alpine farmsteads of Cansiglio until the green pastures of the plain, this is the "land of sweat". The extraction of calcium carbonate is perpetuated by the work of the quarrymen while in the temple of cycling the "Toni Pessot" museum holds the mementos of this tough discipline. Many artists also come from Caneva, among them Enrico and Pierantonio Chiaradia, the first was the sculptor of the equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II on the altar of the Patria in Rome and the second a well-known painter.

Native land of his mother and adopted by the unforgettable Pier Paolo Pasolini, artist and poet to whom this community opened its arms in the '40s and '50s. The house that welcomed him and the attached academy is still open to visitors. The verses of the poet still echo in the air with descriptions of some of the more striking and fascinating places in the area like Versutta. Placed between the cities of wine, in Casarsa is the headquarters of one of the most prestigious winegrowers co-operatives. At the end of April the more than ten years old Wine festival takes place.

It is the village without a name. In this area there is not a built-up area of Castelnovo, but an area consisting of around forty hamlets, among which is Praforte – abandoned more than thirty years ago - and Almadis, reachable after having crossed an ancient stone bridge. The land does not lack vines, present as native stock. Symbol of the "ghost community" is the church of San Nicolò, whose sunlit facade is visible from many kilometres away.

Embodied in Palazat is the still visible history of this originally Celtic community, but of which the centuries old sackings and devastations have faded it from memory.  In the sixteenth century building the towers that rise towards the sky stand guard over the entire valley below, while in its rooms it is possible to admire the provincial tradition of peasant life in the section of the museum dedicated to the scholar Diogene Penzi.
