Religious sentiment is perpetuated through time with the examples of popular devotion that take form in the frescoes on the house walls, in the niches and capitals, testimony to the reverence for the Virgin or for a Saint. The medieval tower of the Sbrojavaccas recalls the power of the noble family at that time. Now as then, the natural environments remain intact: in Villotta there lives a flourishing pagoda-tree, an over hundred years old shrub of Asian origin.

Capital of the Parco delle Dolomiti Friulane, it overcomes the visitor with its surrounding nature. Between the summits the golden eagle reigns while in the valley floor summer refuges, mountain farmsteads and houses in stone seem to be engraved on the landscape. Above all the "Bell-tower of the Val Montanaia" is dominant; a rare example of a monolith of extreme beauty, just decreed – together with all the Dolomite chain – a protected World Heritage by Unesco.

In its sky the eagle rules, along the slopes roam deer, chamois, and ibex. Nature, wild and sweet, offers thousands of splendours in all seasons, along the pathways to silent refuges or in the tracks of dinosaurs. Houses with "the snow door" are a characteristic. In the local museum is to be found pieces of typical craftwork like wooden objects sold by the "sedonere" women and the scarpèth. Destination for the sporting of curling and conoeing.

The eyes are lost in search of the sea horizon, in the wonderful view that the "balcony of Friuli" offers to those onlookers on clear air days. In the heart of the village is the church of S. Giacomo. During the Forgiveness function (end of May) the monumental staircase of 98 steps is climbed on knees by the penitents. In Pradis the Cosa stream over millions of years has eroded the rocks, creating a striking grotto and ravine open to the public.

Imagine that princes, ladies and knights, tired from the long journey, in the time of the Longobards stayed in the Curtis Regia Naonis. Still today, as then, the landscape that made the setting for the residences of the nobles remains unchanged: "the Friulian steppes" of the Magredi, great expanses of shingle and spontaneous vegetation in the Meduna and Cellina riverbeds. For its great wealth of nature this area is part of the Community sites of interest.

The unending silence of the valley watches over the agonising cries of those who in '63 lost their lives in the Vajont disaster, an event that is reconstructed in the exhibition of the tragedy a few steps from the dam. To the residences of Erto, protected by the Superintendent of the Arts because they are so typical, are placed alongside those of Casso, spectacularly outstretched towards the sky. On Good Friday the sacred representation of the Via Crucis is held.

Its name signifies "sacred place" perhaps because of the presence of an ancient Benedictine abbey subject to Pomposa, built before the year one thousand. But it is nature, with the surrounding mountains and green hills that make even more striking this place in which the rural architecture is distinguished by an oddity: the common courtyard houses, facing on the same courtyard, with a large stone archway that communicates with the public street.

The fortune of this territory is due to the river Fiume that silently splits the town in two and to the numerous small rivulets that silently follow their course. In the past and today also, the force of the river is used to work paddlewheels and provide energy for cardboard factories and works placed in the vicinity of the channels. For enthusiasts of cartoons, every year in the third week of September there is the Fiumettopolix cartoon world market exhibition.

The cold spring waters that spring out in the town centre, in the past a refreshment place for hunters, Roman soldiers, medieval pilgrims and merchants, are its distinctive element, so much so that it became the name of the town. A thoroughfare for people of various historic eras, it suffered sackings and devastation, like those of the Turks in 1499 that every year are remembered by the sound of the bells on the 30th September. At the end of May the street theatre parade is held while the water festival is in the middle of June.

It has the form of a small antique crib, but at Christmas in Poffabro on the window sills, in the houses and streets there is hosted a great many of these creations from the skilled hands of its residents. This characteristic, together with the simplicity of their housing in bare pebbles and wood, make the hamlet one of the thousand most beautiful hamlets of Italy, embellished by the stupendous framework of mountains and uncontaminated nature.  Of singular interest is the museum with miniature valley buildings in the "Da lì mans di Carlin" exhibition.

In the sunlight gleam the cutting blades forged by the skilful hands of blacksmiths who until the end of the Middle Ages made arms for the troops of the Serenissima. Now there is modern technology in the place of bellows and fire, but Maniago undoubtedly remains the capital of the knife and accessories for the kitchen. From these workshops came the sabres of Braveheart. Dominating the square is the rampant lion of St. Mark painted by Amalteo on Palazzo d'Attimis.

It is the land of skilful stonecutters, like the master mason Luigi Del Bianco who directed the work for the sculpture of Mount Rushmore figuring the four presidents of the United States. But it is also the homeland of liberty: the hamlet of Navarons is linked with the unfortunate Risorgimento movements of Antonio and Silvio Andreuzzi, while from Monte Valinis sports people launch themselves into empty space with paragliders and hang gliders, tracing acrobatic geometry.
